Dreamers, award winners and a Dj – Young Dreams, Synd og Skam, Dj Static and 12 others to play at SPOT 2013

Daniel Heydorn

The new SPOT batch is both musically and geographically connected in a zigzaggy fashion and the final destination is the 3rd – 4th of May in the city of smiles and progress.

The Norwegian lads in Young Dreams are into compositional music and surrealism while Pitchfork applauds their blue pop. The debut album is right around the corner and the seeds to something big have already been sowed. Another synth loving act, So-so Echo, have made it impressively far within a few months. During a stay in L.A. this winter they decided to change direction from film scores to synth pop. From L.A. to Aarhus, where the town hero Dj Static is preparing for a hip-hop blowout when he arrives with the likes of Peter Sommer, Orgi-E, Jøden, J-Spliff, Jooks, Blacc EL, Nat Ill, Temu and Danni Toma.

The party in Aarhus continues with Go Go Berlin who, with their charm on the denim jackets, offers classic rock with attitude and dedication. From Aarhus we go out in the world with the concept Danish Vibes which is an export project directed at high quality niche music. At SPOT a jury consisting of four German industry representatives has chosen four world-oriented bands from a field of over 70 applicants. In this round we have the Balkan boys from Tako Lako who several times before have had a SPOT party, and Mzungu Kichaa who was born in Denmark and raised in Tanzania where he took in the country’s bongo flava-genre and has now given it a personal touch.

synd og skam
(Synd og Skam promise fugues and free-form)

From far-away continents to Nordic nature with Benjamin and By the Patient. Faroese Benjamin plays a voodoo inspired kind of pop music, while By the Patient is one of the country’s biggest (extreme-)metal hopes, and they both find inspiration in the surrounding nature. If you are still hungry for metal, Fossils’c instrumental get-together of punk and metal elements – performed on bass and drums in front of a stunned audience – should satisfy your hunger.

SPOT’s singer-songwriter tradition is kept alive by Mathilde Savery who debuted on February 28 with the live-ep “Where Are You Tonight”. Jens Madsen, who is the man behind Echo Me, is also a person with a guitar who performs with a band in live situations. The chain is completed with the favorites of radio show Det Elektriske Barometer, Den Fjerde Væg, who writes Danish-language music with distinctive arrangements and after last year’s debut received a lot of praise from the reviewers.

From the teenage bedroom’s neat notebooks we move into the pub’s deep fogs to find Synd og Skam’s poetic fabulating over dissonant chords and agitated drumming. The group from Svendborg was recently given the award Steppeulven for Hope of the Year.

The batch is rounded off with the two exciting electronica-style projects Panamah and Odd Collection. Panamah is classic songwriting meets modern electronics and the trio has earlier been successful with the hit “DJ Blues”. Odd Collection offers a similar meet between known virtues and new sound. The debut is on its way, but they have already worked with Medina.
